A leading pharmaceutical scientist, Dr. Michael Chang, first conceived Pharmanex in 1994. His vision was to create dietary supplements of proven safety and efficacy by applying the methodologies and disciplines of western pharmaceutical science to natural products.

During his 15 years in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Chang searched for ways to protect, preserve, and improve people's health. As Deputy Director of Medicinal Chemistry at pharmaceutical giant Merck, Sharp and Dohme, he managed screening activities, which involved traveling the world looking for "magic bullets," those single chemicals that could be taken from a natural source and turned into a drug.

In that process, Dr. Chang examined 50,000 different extracts searching for a single chemical that could be patented and taken through the drug discovery process. "I knew the ingredients existed, but the process was too complicated and expensive," he says.

According to Dr. Chang, isolating individual molecules that could be patented by the drug companies often resulted in less effective products with more side effects. His scientific research confirmed what traditional Chinese medical practitioners and other alternative medicine theories had been asserting for centuries-natural products taken as a whole work together to promote health and wellness. He began to realize the tremendous potential of "products provided by nature and proven by science," or, in other words, natural products created, refined, and substantiated through a scientific pharmaceutical approach.

Dr. Chang eventually left the pharmaceutical industry to pursue his vision of delivering natural nutraceutical products, which could be scientifically proven to have the power to change people's lives. His vision of health and financial resposibility readily attracted the funding and business expertise needed to build a successful company.

In the few years since its inception, Pharmanex has literally set a new industry standard for quality and scientific integrity.
